The Noticing Project: Week 3 - Watch What Happens

April 06, 20261 min read

Last week, we talked about noticing a student and saying something about it.What difference did that make for you, to focus more on what they did well?

You saw it.
You named it.
And in that moment, your message to the student was...

"I see you."

This week, I want to offer one small next step.

After you notice and say something, watch what happens.

Does the student sit a little taller?

Are you noticing that you are correcting them less?

Are they beginningto act more like the person youtold them you noticed?

That’s identity forming. Repetition is important here, so circle back later and say...

“I’m still noticing that about you…”
“That’s twice now I’ve seen you do that…”

Remember, you are not praising. You are helping the student to see some thing different in themselves.

And then, send it home.

A quick note or email, “I wanted you to know what I saw today in your daughter…”

Those small messages build powerful bridges between home and school. Then, you build support for what you do. That’s engaging their system and doing that gives you support.

In other words, repeat noticing whenever you can. That grows the transformation in students and gives you hope.

And hope is what this special season is all about.
