Finish Strong: Look at What's Working Right Now
As the school year winds down, it’s easy to focus on what didn’t get done or the students you’re still worried about. But before the year ends, try looking in a different direction.
Look at what is working right now.
Think about the student who settles in a little faster.
The one who tries even briefly, before giving up.
The one who looks up and responds when you say their name.
Those small shifts matter.
Yes, there were tough moments this year. But there were also moments that worked.
Moments where something clicked. Moments where a student moved forward.
Those moments count.
They are proof that what you are doing makes a difference.
You are near the finish line and your students are right there with you. Take a moment to think about them now compared to last fall.
What might they say you did that helped?
Maybe it was the time you showed them how to solve a problem.
The patience you gave during a science lab.
The encouragement when they tried something new.
The moment you made them feel important.
These are not small things.
They are everything.
And they are your blueprint for what works next year and the next.
But there’salways moretime for a few more successes. So, here’s a simple idea to finish strong:
Give each student a 3x5 card and ask...
“What will you do to finish this school year successfully so we can celebrate together on the last day?”
Have them write their answer and post the cards where everyone can see them.
You’ll be creating something powerful, maybe a wall of intentions!
A reminder of their capability. A team commitment to finishing well.
And as you look at those cards, remember this...
Your work helped them to desire to succeed.
