3x5 to Thrive: Making the Countdown Count
As the school year winds down, something predictable begins to happen in every building.
Teachers get tired.
Students get restless.
And the focus quietly shifts to what didn't get done and how fast we can reach the finish line.
But what if we helped our teachers finish differently this year, solution-focused style? Not by pushing harder. Not by adding more to their already full plates. But by helping them notice what they did well.
Here's a simple idea you can try this week. Give each teacher in your building a 3x5 card and invite them to take just one small pause in a very full day to reflect on two questions:
1. "What is one way I want to finish this school year well?"
Example: Being more patient during the last period of the day.
Something interesting happens when teachers do this. They begin to notice more of those moments as they happen, when students respond better and when they experience a good moment themselves. Those moments add up, creating stronger relationships, calmer classrooms, and students who leave feeling more confident and connected.
2. "If my students could describe me at the end of this year, what would I hope they would say?"
Hint: Encourage them to actually ask their students! When teachers choose how they finish, they create more of those moments on purpose.
As school counselors, you are uniquely positioned to offer this kind of reflective pause to the teachers around you. A 3x5 card slipped under a door, left in a mailbox, or handed over coffee in the staffroom can be the small gesture that helps a tired teacher remember why they started.
And while they may never see the full impact of what they do, their students will carry it with them.
Take a card.
Share it with a teacher.
Help them finish well.
