School counselor Naomi Fujiwara having a meaningful holiday season conversation with a student, helping them discover their strengths

The Perfect Gift

December 08, 20251 min read

This season, we often find ourselves searching for the perfect gift - something that will light up someone’s face, show them we’ve been paying attention, and reflect how much we care.

In many ways, that’s exactly what we do in solution-focused work.

Each time a student sits across from us, we quietly begin our search...

What’s something they would love to discover about themselves?

What strength have they forgotten?

What hope have they whispered beneath their worries?

Just like gift-giving, solution-focused counseling isn’t about giving what we think they need. It’s about tuning in closely enough to offer something that fits just right… a glimpse of what’s already working, a memory of past success, a step toward a preferred future.

This week, when you are walking a student back to class or helping them discover their best self, remember: the most meaningful gifts are the ones that say,““I see you! This gift fits the valuable person you are.”

May your conversations be filled with possibility and may the solution force be with all of us this holiday season.
